Mission, Activities and Population Served
Our animal shelter is situated in the small Town of Bath, New York in rural Steuben County. This is a very economically challenged area, and we are faced daily with the sad repercussions of companion animal overpopulation and animal cruelty.
Our organization’s Mission is to promote the humane treatment and care of animals with in Steuben County. Our Mission also includes elevating and supporting the human and companion animal bond. Our work is of critical benefit for both animals and people in our community.
The Fingers Lakes SPCA provides Subsidized Spay/Neuter, Cruelty Investigations and Humane Education Programs to our community. These proactive Programs worked to reduce animal suffering. Additionally, they benefit the people of our community as a whole by making our community safer and more humane. For example, research conclusively shows that animal cruelty is directly related to human violence; when cases of animal cruelty are dealt with insufficiently, there is a human consequence. Our SPCA employs our County’s one and only Animal Cruelty Investigator.
Project Catnip (our Subsidized Spay/Neuter Program) helps to reduce feline overpopulation in our area by preventing births thus reducing the animal suffering that occurs simply because there are too many domesticated cats and no enough homes to go around. People of our community benefit from this program as well because the sterilization of a pet eliminates many health issues for their animal friend as well as unwanted behaviors associated with reproduction. Furthermore, spaying/neutering saves our community dollars. It is far more costly to round up, care for euthanize the offspring of these animals. Spay and Neuter Programs are essential to the humane elimination of this tragic and costly problem.
In addition to fulfilling requests from teachers for lectures and humane
education presentations, the Finger Lakes SPCA also provides KIND News to classrooms in Steuben
County. This humane education program helps to educate and instill compassion in children with
regard to respecting each other, animals and our environment. Our animal welfare group also
provides a facility to house orphan cats and dogs and works hard to find them good homes with loving
and responsible families. We also help the animals and people of our
community by maintaining a
database of lost and found companion animals.
